Health Benefits of a Vegetarian Diet

The demand for Vegetarian Food in restaurants is on the rise, so is the quality of meatless options, starting here at Caravan Kebab in Edmonds, WA! Our menu is a rich compilation of some of the tastiest, most authentic dishes hailing from India, the Mediterranean region, and Europe. While in the rest of the world, vegetarianism has been a part of cultures for many centuries, it is becoming a more common diet in this part of the world as there are many health benefits.

Weight Loss and Management: Vegetarian diets promote weight loss because they focus on nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods. Examples of major foods in a vegetarian diet are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, nuts, and soy. However, a vegetarian diet alone doesn’t necessarily mean consuming fewer calories.

Lowers Cholesterol Levels: The first thing a doctor tells you to reduce high cholesterol levels is to change the foods you eat. Foods that are high in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol can be found in meat, dairy products, and eggs. These foods raise cholesterol levels, which puts the eater at increased heart attack risk. It’s best to avoid foods that are very high in saturated fat because they are dangerous, triggering the body to produce extra cholesterol. Whereas plants do the exact opposite! Plants are low in saturated fat and free from cholesterol. Another benefit to plants is that they are rich in soluble fiber. Soluble fiber helps lower cholesterol. Another benefit to soluble fiber is that it slows the absorption of cholesterol. It also reduces the amount of cholesterol that the liver produces.

Reduce the Risk of Cardiovascular: Vegetarians and pescetarians have a lower risk of developing coronary heart disease than meat-eaters. Vegetarian diets were associated with a 30% reduced risk of death from ischemic heart disease when compared to nonvegetarian diets. Thanks to some of the other points we mention, Vegetarian diets benefit multiple risk factors for heart disease. Vegetarian diets avoid animal products, which are often high in saturated fat, iron, and hormones.

Reduce the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: Recent studies have shown that a healthy plant-based diet can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Abstaining from animal products is not sufficient to stave off type 2 diabetes nor will a vegetarian diet cure your diabetes. It can definitely provide benefits over a nonvegetarian diet. For example, it may make your body more responsive to insulin.

It is important to work with your primary care provider to watch your health and manage medications, as you make dietary changes.
